A Buyer’s Guide for Prescription Sports Glasses for Softball

Playing softball is all about having fun! When you're out on the playing field, you want to be able to do more than just go through the motions—you’d want to get higher scores and win more games. And really, who's not in it for that?

The best prescription sports glasses for softball are the ones that help you see the ball better, improve your batting average, get you more hits, and crack more home runs.

While traditional glasses are fine for everyday use, they won't offer the protection that sports glasses do. Sports glasses for softball have a lens made from polycarbonate material that is much stronger than regular glass lenses. This makes them ideal for protecting your eyes while playing ball sports because they're able to withstand sudden impact without breaking or shattering into pieces that could cause injury to your eye or face area when hit directly by an object (such as another player's bat).

It doesn't matter if you're a pro softball player or just playing for fun with friends—if you want to see clearly and don't want to risk losing sight in one of your eyes forever, it's time to invest in some protective eyewear.

Guide to choosing a new pair of softball glasses

Protection

Protection from impact, UV rays, and sun glare are all important considerations to make when shopping for a pair of softball glasses.

If you are shopping for your child, it's even more important to consider their vision development. As children’s eyes continue to develop, they need more protection from the sun than adults do. We recommend looking for a pair of softball glasses or goggles that are independently tested to ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) F803 for maximum protection.

The F803 standard is the strictest of its kind in relation to protective eyewear, protecting participants in various sports involving high-impact activities from serious injury. It has been outlined to ensure that glasses can withstand forces from projectiles that are sized between 40 and 65.1 mm and fire at speeds of up to 90 mph.

In addition, the sun is an important factor in the fielder’s ability to see the ball, and it can cause a variety of different problems. For this reason, you should protect your eyes from UVA and UVB rays and keep your vision clear at all times—even when there are bright lights shining on you from all directions.

Fit & Frame Type

Sports glasses and goggles for softball can make a difference to comfort and performance when worn under a helmet, catcher’s mask, or even your hat or visor. It’s important to test these with any other gear to ensure style compatibility. Our home try-on program makes it easy to do just that.

Frames: Frames for softball provide a secure fit and come with a frame strap for extra stability. They are easy to put on and take off, making them ideal for most players.

Goggles: Softball goggles have headband straps that fit comfortably around the head. They are recommended for players who wear batting helmets or catcher’s helmets because they provide a snugger fit under other equipment.

Interchangeable: For athletes who enjoy a variety of sports, or those that like to play different positions on the field, an interchangeable frame to goggle style offers the best of both worlds.

LENS TECHNOLOGY

Impact Protection

To maximize protection, you will want to select a shatterproof, polycarbonate lens for your softball glasses or goggles. These lenses are not only shatterproof, but they also prevent the eye from coming into contact with the lens upon impact. You can have this included in all Rec Specs frames at no additional cost.

Tints

The best tint for your softball glasses and goggles depends on the time of day you will be playing. Clear lenses may be best if you have many night games, as they do not block light. If you need a little more contrast on the field with varying light, a brown or amber tint can help you see the ball against a blue sky or green field.

If you are looking for something that adjusts automatically to different light conditions, go with a light-responsive lens; their color changes based on the amount of UV light present.

Coatings

Lens coatings can help you see more clearly on the softball field. We recommend 2x2 ProCoat, a unique dual-layer coating of fast fog recovery and anti-glare. It comes standard with our prescription lenses—and it reduces glare from the sun or under field lights.
