Which Lens Coating Is Right For You?

In order to get the best performance from your eyewear, you should consider lens coatings.

Lens coatings are a treatment for glasses that help improve the performance, appearance and durability of your eyewear. These can be applied as a single layer or multiple layers of material that give you protection from scratches, UV rays and stains – depending on what type of coating has been applied.

When you’re shopping for new glasses or lenses for your current pair, it’s important to consider the different types of coatings available so you can find something that works well for your vision and lifestyle.

At Optics Outfitter, we offer a range of unique lens coatings that are built for performance and clear vision for active patients.

STANDARD Rx COATINGS

ANTI-REFLECTIVE

Also known as AR coating or glare-reducing coating, is a multi-layer, hydrophobic coating applied to your lenses that helps eliminate unwanted reflections and increase comfort and clarity.

If you are sensitive to blue light and spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen, consider purchasing anti-reflective lens coatings.

ANTI-FOG

Anti-fog lenses are a great investment for anyone who wears glasses, particularly during the colder months or while playing sports—which can cause perspiration—because they eliminate the condensation of moisture that causes fogging on your lenses. These coatings can be applied to most eyeglass lenses, including high-index lenses and photochromic lenses.

SCRATCH-RESISTANT

Scratch-resistant coatings or hard coatings can help protect your glasses from daily wear and tear. These coatings reduce the appearance of scratches, but it is important that you keep your lenses in a hard case to prevent further damage. Scratch-resistant coatings have a harder surface than standard coatings, so they are more effective at reducing the appearance of scratches. However, it’s important to note that no coating is 100% scratch-proof.
